In the world of competitive ballroom dancing, few partnerships have enjoyed the longevity, success, and mutual dedication of Olga and Mark Elsbury. Their story is one of international talent, unwavering commitment, and a shared passion for dance that has carried them from youth championships to professional titles on some of the world's most prestigious stages

Two Dancers, One Extraordinary Journey

Olga Elsbury was born and raised in Moscow, Russia, while Mark Elsbury grew up in London, England. Their paths first crossed in 2002 when Olga travelled to the UK in search of a dance partner. What began as a professional try out soon became one of ballroom dancing's most successful partnerships, both on and off the dance floor.

Just two weeks after meeting, the couple won their first competition together in the Under 21 Ballroom National Selection Competition. The immediate chemistry between them was undeniable, and Olga soon relocated to England to begin their competitive career representing Great Britain.

Over two decades later, their partnership remains one of the most respected in the ballroom community.

Olga's Early Passion for Dance

Olga's journey into dance began shortly after her eighth birthday. Inspired by her mother, who had once dreamed of becoming a dancer herself, Olga started attending classes at her aunt's dance studio in Moscow. Her competitive spirit emerged early, particularly after achieving second place in her first competition and deciding she wanted to aim for victory in every event that followed.

As she developed her skills, it became clear that dance would be much more than a childhood hobby. By her teenage years, she was searching for the right partner to pursue an international ballroom career—a search that ultimately led her to England and to Mark.

Born Into Ballroom: Mark's Story

Unlike many dancers, Mark was quite literally raised in the dance world. Born to professional dancer parents, dance was woven into everyday life from the beginning. His parents taught and performed professionally before opening their own dance studio, creating an environment where Mark developed his skills almost as soon as he could walk.

His achievements across multiple age categories are remarkable. Mark became the only dancer to win major titles at Juvenile, Junior, Youth, Amateur, and Professional Show Dance levels, cementing his status as one of Britain's most accomplished ballroom competitors.

Dominating the Youth and Amateur Ranks

After forming their partnership, Olga and Mark quickly established themselves as leading competitors in the Youth and Under 21 categories. Their achievements included:

Closed British Under 21 Champions
Open British (Blackpool) Under 21 Champions
UK Closed Under 21 Champions
International Under 21 Champions
These early successes laid the foundation for an outstanding amateur career. Over the following years, they became:

Seven-time National Closed British and UK Closed Amateur Ballroom Champions
WDC World Amateur Finalists
Open British Amateur Rising Star Runners-Up
Winners and medallists at major international competitions including the Chinese Taipei Open, Spanish Open, Vancouver Open, Belgian Open, Russian Open, German Masters, London Open, Estonian Open and Polish Open.
Their rise through the international rankings demonstrated not only their technical excellence but also their consistency across a wide range of competitions and judging panels.

Professional Success on the World Stage

After turning professional, Olga and Mark continued to build on their already impressive résumé.

Among their notable professional achievements are:

British Professional Ballroom Champions (2017 and 2018)
Two-time British Professional Show Dance Champions
International Rising Star Professional Ballroom Champions
WDC World Professional Show Dance Finalists
Vice Champions of the UK Closed Professional Ballroom Championships
European Professional Championship finalists and high-ranking international competitors.
One of the moments they treasure most is winning the Rising Star Professional competition at the International Championships, becoming the first British couple in nine years to reclaim the title for Great Britain.

Favourite Dances and Competitive Highlights

Although highly accomplished across all ballroom disciplines, Olga and Mark have a particular affection for the Slow Foxtrot. They believe the dance best reflects their natural personalities, partnership, and connection on the floor.

They also enjoy the energy and athleticism of the Quickstep, which has consistently been one of their highest-scoring dances in competition.

When it comes to favourite events, the prestigious Open British Championships at Blackpool hold special significance. Widely regarded as the most iconic competition in ballroom dancing, Blackpool has provided many of the defining moments of their career.

Creating an Iconic Style with Chrisanne Clover

Beyond competition results, Olga has become recognised for her elegant and distinctive ballroom image. A significant part of that image has been developed through her long-standing relationship with Chrisanne Clover. Olga describes being part of the Chrisanne Clover team as a privilege, praising the company's creativity, craftsmanship, and commitment to excellence. She believes the brand consistently produces the highest-quality ballroom fashion and takes pride in representing them on the international stage.

Signature Dresses and Personal Style

One of Olga's most memorable gowns was a striking Sugar Pink chiffon dress adorned with marabou boas and pink bead droppers. Nicknamed her "Barbie Doll Dress," it perfectly captured her feminine and glamorous style while creating beautiful movement across the dance floor.

Another favourite was a stunning turquoise gown embellished with gold sequins. The dress attracted countless compliments and became one of her most celebrated competition looks.

Throughout her career, Olga has embraced bold yet elegant designs that enhance her performance while remaining distinctive and memorable.

A Love of Feathers, Chiffon and Georgette

One of the defining characteristics of Olga's ballroom style is her love of feather detailing. She frequently incorporates ostrich and marabou feathers into her dresses, using them to create movement, drama, and a more exotic appearance on the floor.

She particularly appreciates the extensive selection of feather trims and boas available through Chrisanne Clover, allowing each couture creation to feel unique and personalised.

In terms of fabric, Olga's favourites include:

-Shading Satin Chiffon
-Georgette
-Custom shaded ballroom fabrics that create visual depth and flowing movement.

These lightweight materials are highly valued in ballroom fashion because they move effortlessly with the dancer, enhancing spins, turns, and sweeping ballroom lines.

Attention to detail extends beyond the gown itself. Olga particularly values matching accessories and recalls a bespoke black hairpiece created by Chrisanne Clover that perfectly complemented one of her couture looks.

Life Beyond Competition

Alongside their competitive careers, Olga and Mark have developed a passion for teaching. Through their dance schools and community classes, they have shared their expertise with dancers of all ages and abilities, helping inspire the next generation of ballroom talent.

Following the pandemic, they expanded their teaching activities while continuing to compete internationally, achieving further success including victory at the Warsaw International Dance Championships.

Their commitment to teaching reflects a broader desire to grow the ballroom community and pass on the knowledge they have accumulated throughout decades of competition.

A Lasting Ballroom Legacy

From a chance meeting at Heathrow Airport to becoming British Champions, international finalists, and respected educators, Olga and Mark Elsbury have built a remarkable legacy in competitive ballroom dancing.

Their story combines technical excellence, artistic expression, resilience, and partnership. Whether competing at Blackpool, teaching future champions, or showcasing elegant Chrisanne Clover couture on the world's biggest dance floors, they continue to exemplify the sophistication and dedication that define ballroom dancing at its highest level.
