Sunray Pleating

The Art of Sunray Pleating
Sunray pleating is one of the most striking techniques in couture dancewear design, celebrated for its movement, volume and sculptural elegance. Instantly recognisable on the dancefloor, it transforms fabric into flowing architecture that responds beautifully to every step, turn and rise.
A sunray pleat is a graduated accordion pleat formed in a semi-circle. The pleats begin delicately small at the hip or waist and gradually open out towards the hem, creating dramatic sweep and fluid motion. This unique construction allows the fabric to move effortlessly while maintaining a refined, couture silhouette.

What Is a Sunray (or Drop)?
In its simplest form, a sunray is a circular skirt shape that, once pleated, creates graduating accordion lines radiating from a central point. While sunray pleats are most commonly used for skirts, their versatility makes them ideal for sleeves, floats, godets, trouser legs and even decorative design details.
The term “drop” refers to the measurement from the waist to the hem — essentially, how long the sunray section is. Each sunray pattern includes a cut‑out at the centre point where the pleats originate. This central area is not pleated and typically measures around 20cm in diameter, though it can vary depending on the pattern.
Understanding these measurements is essential when planning volume, proportion and movement within a dance costume.
Creating Volume: How Many Sunrays Are Used?
In fashion, a traditional pleated skirt often uses two semi‑circles. However, competitive Ballroom couture demands far greater drama.
To achieve that signature Chrisanne Clover movement, gowns frequently use six to eight sunray‑pleated half‑circles, creating extraordinary volume and visual impact on the floor. The more sunrays used, the fuller and more expressive the skirt becomes — resulting in powerful flowlines that enhance every performance.
Fabric Choices for Sunray Pleating
Our sunray pleating service is available in georgette and satin/pearl chiffon, each offering a different aesthetic and movement quality.
Georgette provides soft, fluid drape with elegant weight and control Satin / Pearl Chiffon delivers luminous lightness with enhanced lift and shimmerEach piece is supplied as one pleated half‑circle, available in 50cm, 70cm or 100cm lengths, allowing designers complete creative freedom when building their garment.
Couture in Motion: Design Inspiration
Sunray pleating truly comes alive in couture creation.

Six sunray‑pleated half‑circles of 100cm Sassy Yellow georgette combine to create a spectacular gown with sweeping movement and radiant energy.

A signature silhouette for Natascha Karabey, a striking fluo red couture design features eight sunray‑pleated 100cm half‑circles of satin chiffon, delivering breathtaking volume and drama.

In black couture, six 100cm black georgette half‑circles, paired with two additional 50cm shoulder panels, create fluid cascades of movement and sculptural elegance.
Each gown demonstrates how sunray pleating enhances performance, amplifies line and brings couture craftsmanship to life.

Bellarosa Lace Spotlight

Stretch lace is one of the quickest ways to make a design look intentional, elevated, and stage-ready. In this post, we’ll break down what makes Bellarosa special (including its 13 colour options and signature scalloped edge), then walk through real gown examples—so you can confidently plan lace placement, layering, and crystal colour stories.

Bellarosa is designed to look luxurious up close and read clearly from the floor. With 13 colour options, you can match your base fabric for a seamless “all-over” effect or deliberately contrast for definition. The scalloped edge is a feature—plan placements where it can be seen (necklines, cuffs, hemlines, and back details). Pair it with fluid fabrics like georgette and chiffon for softness, or velvet and crepe for a sharper, modern look. Finish the story with crystals that either echo your lace colour (clean and refined) or shift it (high-impact sparkle under lights).
Design case studies: three ways to use Bellarosa

Worn by world champion Irina at the UK Open, this white Ballroom gown features 4m of white Bellarosa stretch lace layered over georgette and satin, finished with ostrich feather fringe and boas. Swarovski crystals: Crystal AB, Electric White, White Opal.
Show the scallop: frame necklines and cuffs so the edge becomes your “trim.” Keep the base clean: white-on-white layers look richest when fabrics stay tonal. Pick a glow palette: Crystal AB + whites amplify light without overwhelming lace detail.Materials at a glance:
White bellarosa stretch lace: 4m Georgette white: 20m Saint chiffon cappuccino: 6m Stretch net cappccino: 1.1m Matt lycra: 50cm Satin white: 1.5m Ostrich feather fringe white: 13m Ostrich feather boa: 2 pieces Crystals: Crystal; Crystal AB; White Opal; Electric White

2) Structured drama in Midnight Sky (BDD662PP)
Midnight Sky: 1m of Bellarosa stretch lace shapes the bodice, teamed with velvet and stretch crepe for a clean, modern line. Swarovski crystals: Crystal and Cobalt.
Use lace as architecture: place it where you want the eye to land—bust, waist, and shoulder lines. Mix matte + shine: velvet/crepe keeps it sleek; crystals add controlled sparkle. Limit colours: one strong blue crystal shade keeps the look modern. Materials at a glance: Stretch net midnight sky: 80cm Lustre lycra: 80cm Bellarosa stretch lace: 1m Premium crepe: 6m Crystal organza: 7m Velvet: 40cm Crystals: Crystal; Cobalt

3) Rich, romantic Wine (BDD598PP)
Wine Ballroom: an all‑over look in 11m wine Bellarosa stretch lace, floating over cappuccino lycra and satin chiffon, finished with ostrich feather boas. Swarovski crystals: Fuchsia Shimmer, Siam Nightfall, Light Siam Shimmer, Ruby.
Commit to the colour: an all-over lace layer looks most couture when it’s uninterrupted. Let the underlayer soften it: cappuccino + chiffon adds warmth and movement under wine lace. Build a crystal gradient: mix ruby tones with shimmer shades for depth. Materials at a glance: Matt lycra cappuccino: 1.3m Bellarosa stretch lace: 11m Satin chiffon cappuccino: 9m Crinoline 77mm cappuccino: 2 rolls Ostrich feather boa: 2 pieces Crystals: Fuchsia Shimmer; Siam Nightfall; Light Siam Shimmer; Ruby

Practicewear spotlight: Audrey Latin dress
For practicewear, lace works best as a deliberate “finish”—not an afterthought. On the Audrey Latin dress, Bellarosa trims a back triangle godet with a scalloped edge, giving clean movement and a premium look. Tip: add crystals at the godet point to weight it slightly and exaggerate the whip effect.
Ready to design with Bellarosa?
Pick one design move to try: frame a neckline with the scalloped edge, commit to an all-over lace layer, or build a crystal palette that amplifies your colour story. Start with your base fabric, choose your Bellarosa shade, then plan where the scallop will be seen from the floor—because the best gowns don’t just sparkle… they’re engineered to be noticed.

Stretch Satin Fabric

Stretch Satin Fabric: Your Complete Chrisanne Clover Guide to Elegance, Performance & Practical Use
When it comes to designing couture or dancewear, the choice of fabric shapes everything—from movement and silhouette to comfort and longevity. Among the most beloved materials used at Chrisanne Clover is Stretch Satin, renowned for its lustrous sheen, fluid drape, and versatility. In this blog, we explore what makes this fabric exceptional, how it behaves structurally, and why it remains a favourite across performance and couture design.
Understanding the Structure: What Makes Stretch Satin Unique?
Before diving into creative applications, it’s important to understand the technical nature of Stretch Satin—especially because this fabric behaves differently from true elastic-based stretch materials.
Fabric Width: 112cm Available in 10 vibrant colour options perfectly colour matched to colour collections Where the Stretch Comes From:The stretch does not come from elastane. Instead, it comes from the woven structure itself, giving the fabric a mechanical, one‑way stretch.
While Stretch Satin offers movement, it cannot perform the same way as elastane‑based stretch fabrics in areas that require significant give.
Chrisanne Clover Stretch Satin features:
Excellent one‑way mechanical stretch Good bias stretch, increasing versatility in shaping and drape Beautiful glossy shine that captures light effortlessly Suitability for all‑over garments or statement skirt workThe possibilities truly are endless—whether you're crafting dramatic movement in ballroom skirts or sculpting clean silhouettes for performance.

What Is Stretch Satin? A Closer Look
Stretch Satin is a hybrid of visual luxury and functional design. Traditionally, satin is known for its unmistakably smooth surface and elegant sheen. With Stretch Satin, these qualities are retained—but enhanced with mechanical flexibility.
Key characteristics include:
A smooth, luminous surface characteristic of satin weaving Added flexibility due to the woven structure, not synthetic stretch fibres A fluid drape that works beautifully in motion Durability that withstands the demands of performance and repeated wearThis combination makes Stretch Satin a premium option for garments requiring sophistication, controlled stretch, and a polished finish.
Why Designers Choose Stretch Satin for Dancewear
Dancewear demands excellence in both appearance and performance. Stretch Satin delivers on both fronts:
1. Movement-Focused Flexibility
Its mechanical stretch offers the right amount of give to support shape and movement—especially in skirts or panels requiring extra fluidity.
2. Stage-Ready Aesthetic
Its glossy finish radiates under lights, making dancers appear brighter, sharper, and more dynamic on the floor.
3. Durability You Can Rely On
Chrisanne Clover’s Stretch Satin withstands wear, rehearsal demands, and costume handling without losing its sheen or structure.
4. A Sculpted, Polished Fit
The fabric moulds beautifully in areas where little stretch is needed, creating clean, elegant lines.

Where Stretch Satin Shines: Popular Uses
Because of its versatility and finish, Stretch Satin is a favourite in both dancewear and couture:
In Dancewear
Ballroom skirts: Stunning movement and dramatic visual flow Latin and smooth accents: Ideal for panels, inserts, and decorative elements Bodices (with care): Beautiful when structured properly and not used over the bust Accessories: Gloves, belts, sashes, and headpieces benefit from satin’s shineIn Couture Fashion
Off the dance floor, Stretch Satin finds its home in:
Evening gowns Draped formalwear Tailored satin jackets Couture-panelled designs requiring gentle structureDesigners value how Stretch Satin balances body and fluidity—giving couture garments a timeless, elegant finish.

Tips for Sewing and Designing with Stretch Satin
Working with satin requires care to preserve its beauty. Here are some expert tips:
· Pattern placing: Be mindful how you place your pattern pieces as the satin shine will affect the look of the panels if they not placed the same way, however this could be a design choice and the shine at opposite ends can change the overall look. Cut with precision: A rotary cutter helps maintain clean lines and reduces slippage. Use the right needle: A ballpoint or microtex needle avoids snags. Choose stretch-friendly seams: Zigzag or overlock stitching helps accommodate movement. Press with caution: Always use a pressing cloth and low heat to protect the sheen. Why Stretch Satin Remains a Timeless Favourite
Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to unite:
Luxury Comfort Wearability Performance VersatilityAt Chrisanne Clover, we pride ourselves on offering a Stretch Satin that not only meets professional standards but inspires creativity—from the first sketch to the final performance.
Whether you're designing for the stage, runway, or a bespoke couture client, Stretch Satin provides a foundation that empowers expression, beauty, and confidence.

· Exceptional Elasticity: The fabric's ability to stretch and recover ensures a comfortable fit, allowing dancers to move freely and gracefully during performances.
· Transparent Finish: This quality adds a layer of sophistication, enabling designers to create visually striking effects that enhance the overall aesthetic of the gown.
Versatile Layering Techniques
Using stretch net over a lycra bodice is a popular design technique. This approach allows for creative colour matching or blending, enabling designers to achieve unique and eye-catching looks. Whether opting for a monochromatic scheme or a striking contrast, stretch net adds depth and dimension to the gown.
In summary, stretch net is a vital component in the creation of exquisite ballroom competition gowns, combining functionality with aesthetic appeal to meet the demands of competitive dancers.

Stretch Net in Latin Competition Gowns
Stretch net is a highly sought-after fabric in the world of Latin dresses, celebrated for its sheer quality that enhances the sultry aesthetic typical of Latin attire. Whether used in long or short designs, featuring splits, drapes, or flares, stretch net is essential for creating the striking looks that dancers aspire to achieve.
Aesthetic AppealThe elegance of stretch net is amplified when embellished with crystals, adorned with fringe, or decorated with bead droppers. These embellishments not only enhance the visual appeal but also add a dynamic element to the dancer's movements, making each performance captivating.

Considerations for Weight
Due to its lightweight nature, stretch net may require additional weight at the hem of Latin skirts and dresses to ensure they maintain their shape and flow gracefully during performances. Options such as crinoline or strategically placed crystals can be incorporated to achieve the desired weight, enhancing both the garment's movement and overall aesthetic.
In summary, stretch net is a vital fabric in Latin competition gowns, combining beauty and functionality to help dancers shine on the dance floor.
Preferred Colour and Design Choices
Among the various shades available, cappuccino is a favoured choice among the designers at Chrisanne Clover (pictured above). This hue works beautifully for sleeves and bodices adorned with crystals, providing a radiant shimmer that mimics a nude effect. It not only enhances the gown's elegance but also smooths and complements the dancer's skin tone.

Creative Layering with Stretch Net
To create a range of shades, effects, and textures, consider layering stretch net over metallics and fabrics in various colours and patterns. This method enables you to explore the interaction of light and colour, enhancing the overall visual charm of your outfit.
By combining stretch net with different fabrics and prints, you can craft a vibrant look that captures attention. The contrast between the glossy metallics and the delicate texture of stretch net brings depth and intrigue to your attire, making it more captivating.
Trying out these combinations not only highlights your creativity but also lets you showcase your personal style. Embrace the adaptability of layering to turn your dancewear wardrobe into a canvas filled with unique and striking designs.

Stretch net can be ruched, draped, knotted, twisted and cut to create different effects
Conclusion
Stretch net is a remarkable material that offers numerous benefits across various industries. Its durability, flexibility, and aesthetic appeal makes it an excellent choice for fashion designers, costume creators, and anyone looking to add a unique touch to their projects. Whether you're designing activewear, competition gowns, or practicewear, stretch net can elevate your creations to new heights.

A touch of Ombre

BDD723PP
This stunning plum ombre Ballroom gown uses 22 meters of shaded satin chiffon shading plum to cream. It elegantly drapes over buttercream crystal organza underskirts that are finished with crinoline. The bodice is adorned with Swarovski crystals in hues including fuchsia shimmer, amethyst, golden shadow, and rose gold. Each arm is embellished with plum ostrich feather boas, creating dramatic floats oozing luxury and sophistication.

The shading can be used in either direction, and depending on your design, you might want to use more of one colour than the other. The fabric is 112cm wide, and the shading covers the entire width of the fabric. Shorter designs, like ice skating skirts, may require careful consideration regarding how the skirt will be shaded, as the full shade of the fabric might not be fully realized.

The dress featured employs this shading on godets, but panelled and flared skirt pieces will also work effectively. Pattern placement will need to be taken into account if you want the shade to be consistent; you may need to acquire more fabric to ensure the patterns are placed the same way. However, for an even more dramatic effect, alternating your pattern pieces will create a standout finish! This fabric is also perfect for floats, adding dimension to a couture piece that may be of one colour, imparting a touch of luxury.
The shaded satin chiffon can also be pleated for an even more dazzling finish. We provide a specialist sunray pleating service that will add dimension, volume, and texture to your designs, creating elegant flowlines and movement. Contact our sales team for more information.
