Every year, the International Dance Festival brings together some of the world's finest dancers, showcasing not only exceptional artistry and athleticism but also the very best in Ballroom fashion. This year's spectacular finale at the Royal Albert Hall was no exception, delivering memorable performances, emotional moments, and an array of breathtaking couture creations that captivated audiences throughout the competition.

From championship-winning gowns worn by Irina Cherepanova to a heartfelt farewell performance from Anna and Eric, the event highlighted how costume design enhances storytelling and performance on the ballroom floor.

 

 

A Championship Performance from Irina Cherepanova

Professional Ballroom Champion Irina Cherepanova delivered a remarkable performance throughout the competition, culminating in a title-winning appearance at the final. Her couture wardrobe reflected both elegance and technical craftsmanship, combining luxurious fabrics, intricate embellishment, and dynamic movement.

 

 

BDD853PP: The Winning Gown

Created for Irina Cherepanova, BDD853PP was worn during the final rounds of the competition. Crafted from gold-on-white Moonlight Georgette, the design featured expert ruching and draping over a cappuccino-toned corset bodice, creating a beautifully sculpted silhouette. The gown was adorned with Swarovski® crystals and pearls, while soft asymmetrical floats cascaded from the bodice and crystal-encrusted armbands, creating dramatic movement with every step.

BDD854PP: Cappuccino Lace Elegance

Earlier in the event, Irina Cherepanova wore BDD854PP, an elegant Ballroom gown crafted from Florentina Stretch Lace in a rich cappuccino tone. The high neckline, dramatic lace sleeves, and beautifully panelled skirt created fluid movement across the floor, while a contemporary keyhole back added a modern finish.

Dancing their farewell spotlight dance in the Royal Albert Hall, the couple celebrated a remarkable competitive career that began in the very same venue.

Espen Salberg: A Life Shaped by Dance, Creativity and Reinvention

Some people find one passion and dedicate their lives to it. Espen Salberg found two and excelled at both. From becoming a world champion Latin dancer to building an internationally recognised fashion label, his story is one of creativity, determination and an unwavering love of beauty and movement.

Where It All Began

Born in Oslo, Norway, in 1952, Espen Salberg grew up surrounded by creativity. His father was a hairstylist who competed in international championships, and one of Espen's earliest memories is watching the glamour unfold backstage at fashion and hair shows. The excitement, colour and artistry of those moments left a lasting impression on him and quietly planted the seeds for what would become a remarkable career.

Dance entered his life when he was just ten years old. After spotting a dance school and asking if he could join, he quickly discovered a natural talent. What began as a childhood hobby soon developed into a serious pursuit, and before long he was winning competitions and establishing himself as one of Norway's most promising young dancers.

 

A Partnership That Changed Everything

As a young adult, Espen was partnered with Kirsten Slora, and together they would become one of the most successful dance couples of their generation. Their journey was not always easy. After marrying in 1974, they moved to London with big ambitions but limited resources, determined to learn from the very best teachers in the world of dancesport.

The sacrifices paid off. Through dedication, long hours of training and an incredible partnership on and off the dance floor, Espen and Kirsten rose through the international rankings. In 1976, they achieved a historic milestone, winning both the British Open Amateur Latin Championship and the World Amateur Latin Championship, becoming the first Norwegian couple to gain such international recognition.

 

 

Reaching the Top of the Dance World

Success continued throughout the 1980s as the couple transitioned into the professional ranks. Their distinctive style, musicality and technical excellence earned them victories at the sport's most prestigious events, including the British Open, European Championships and World Professional Latin Championships.

Despite reaching the very pinnacle of competitive dancing, Espen often spoke about the importance of partnership above all else. For him, great dancing was never just about technique. It was about connection, communication and creating something beautiful together. That philosophy would later shape both his teaching and design work.

When Espen and Kirsten retired from competition at the 1983 Blackpool Dance Festival, they left behind a legacy that helped put Norwegian dancesport firmly on the world map.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Retirement from competition marked the beginning of a new chapter. Rather than stepping away from the dance world, Espen dedicated himself to teaching and mentoring future champions. Over the decades he became one of the most respected coaches and lecturers in dancesport, helping countless dancers reach their potential.

What set him apart was his belief that every dancer should develop their own identity. Rather than creating copies of successful competitors, he encouraged individuality, personality and artistic expression. That approach helped him coach an impressive seventeen world champions throughout his career.

 

 

Following a New Dream

Many people would have been content with such an extraordinary dance career. Espen, however, was ready for another challenge.

In 1993, he moved to Rome to study fashion design. It was a bold decision, but fashion had always been part of his life. Having designed dance costumes for many years, he already understood how clothing could enhance movement, confidence and performance.

His transition into fashion felt like a natural evolution rather than a complete career change. Drawing on decades of experience watching bodies move, he developed a unique design philosophy that blended elegance with comfort and freedom. The result was what he called "stretch couture" - garments designed to flatter the body while maintaining effortless movement.

 

 

From the Dance Floor to the Runway

Espen's talent for design soon gained international attention. Over the years, he expanded from dancewear into luxury fashion and eveningwear, creating pieces celebrated for their sophistication and movement. One of his most high-profile projects was designing the memorable purple dress worn by Jennifer Lopez in the film Shall We Dance.

His journey later took him to Bali, where he found fresh inspiration and established a successful fashion business. Today, his collections continue to be admired by clients around the world through Espen Salberg Design and Espen Salberg Haute.

Looking back on Espen Salberg's career, what stands out most is his willingness to embrace change. What brought you and Liis together, and what do you like most about each other?

Madis/ Liis: What brought us together was probably a combination of luck, shared goals and simply being a good match. Of course, every partnership requires work, determination and commitment from both people, and I think we share many of the qualities that allow us to keep developing and creating something unique together.

Madis: One thing I value enormously is the trust Liis has in me. She trusts my decisions and my point of view, and to me that is priceless. It allows me to be completely open with her, and she can be equally open with me. We don’t avoid the obstacles that appear on the way towards our goals — we face them together.

I think that trust is one of the foundations of our partnership. We can rely on each other instead of working against each other. At the end of the day, we are one team moving towards the same goals.

Liis: What I really admire about Madis is how smart and focused he is when it comes to our dancing. No matter whether a result is good or disappointing, he always stays positive and looks for what we can improve. Instead of blaming outside factors, he focuses on what we can do better ourselves, and I really value that about him

 

 

Looking back at your dance journey from your first competition as a child in Tallinn to competing internationally today, what has changed the most in your dancing and in the way you approach competitions?

Madis/Liis: It is an interesting question because, in a way, everything has changed — and at the same time, nothing has changed.

The places, the scale of the competitions, the level of dancing and my own ability have all changed enormously. But the love for dancing, the thrill of competing, the curiosity and the excitement are still the same. Internally, the core has remained unchanged, while everything around it has grown as a result of years of work, experience and determination.

Because that core is still the same, my approach to competition has not changed that much either. I still want to impress people through the skill, quality and emotion of my dancing. I always remind myself that there may be someone in the audience seeing me dance for the very first time. I cannot expect that person to enjoy or connect with my dancing if I am not willing to truly perform for them.

That mindset keeps every competition meaningful, regardless of where in the world it takes place.

 

 

Ballroom is such a physically and mentally demanding sport — how do you and Liis prepare together in the lead-up to a big competition?

Madis/Liis: In a sense, I believe we should always be prepared. I don’t think our attitude should suddenly become completely different just because a major competition is approaching.

Whether it is a small competition, a show or one of the biggest events in the world, every appearance contributes to the reputation and image we build as dancers. The major competitions may be the highlights, but all the smaller performances are important parts of the bigger picture.

That is why staying healthy, developing physically and mentally, and continuing to improve technically and artistically are not things we do only before an important event. They are part of a constant, never-ending process.

I see competitions as milestones and checkpoints along that journey. They show us where we are at that moment, but the development itself never really stops.

 

 

You continue to choose Chrisanne Clover fabric when getting your competition dresses made — what keeps drawing you back to it?

Liis: For me, it’s the quality. I really like that I can get different types of fabric in exactly the same colour from one place, which makes designing a dress much easier. I also trust that Chrisanne Clover colours will look beautiful under competition lights, even in venues where the lighting may not be as strong.

 

Do you have a favourite Chrisanne Clover fabric or colour palette you find yourself returning to for your looks?

Liis: I think it’s quite obvious that my favourite colours are black and white ???? This year alone, I’ve already had three white and three black dresses. But I also really love shaded fabrics — one of my favourites was the satin chiffon in Tiffany fading into white.

For the dress itself, I usually prefer stretch net and Lycra for the body, with georgette for the skirt. I love the comfort and flexibility of the stretch fabrics combined with the lightness and movement of georgette.

 

 

What would you say to other dancers who are choosing fabric for their next competition dress?

Liis: When it comes to colour, I would choose something you genuinely feel good in. All Chrisanne Clover colours look beautiful on the floor. If you want to stand out more, choosing a less common colour can be a great option, although trends always change. Personally, I wouldn’t choose something simply because it is very fashionable at the moment. I would rather go for something you don’t see everywhere in everyday fashion or on the red carpet.

 

How does the fabric itself affect your performance on the floor — comfort, movement, how it catches the light?

Liis: Fabric makes a big difference because a competition dress has to perform with you. I’ve seen dresses made with fashion fabrics that are not really designed for dancing, and they can break or get damaged on the floor. When choosing fabric, you have to remember that you are going to dance in the dress, not just pose in it. During a competition, you shouldn’t be thinking about protecting your dress — you should feel completely free to perform. For me, the fabric has to be strong, comfortable, reliable and move beautifully on the floor.

 

 

What advice would you give to young dancers just starting out, especially those hoping to dance internationally one day?

Madis/Liis: My advice to young dancers would be to find a genuine love for dancing and never give up on it.

The road is not always easy. There will be difficult practices, disappointing results, doubts and days when things simply don’t feel right. But the journey can also be incredibly rewarding and exciting if you learn to appreciate the process rather than only waiting for the result.

Enjoy that journey with your partner and surround yourself with teachers and people you genuinely trust. Stay curious, keep learning and understand that not every day needs to feel perfect for you to be moving forward.

If you truly love what you are doing, keep working and give yourself enough time. Some of the most meaningful achievements are built slowly, through thousands of ordinary days when you simply choose to continue.

Our Customer Experience with Antonia, USA

Transform your dream dress into reality with a Chrisanne Clover Haute Couture gown, created exclusively for you and meticulously designed and handcrafted in London.

While many clients visit us in person, our made-to-measure service is designed to work seamlessly wherever you are in the world. Antonia, based in the USA, has now commissioned two bespoke gowns with Chrisanne Clover, collaborating closely with our couture team through video calls, email and phone consultations before eventually meeting the team in person at the Blackpool Dance Festival.

Her experience demonstrates how distance is no barrier to creating a truly personalised couture gown.

 

A Seamless Couture Experience Across Continents

Like many dancers considering a remote couture service, Antonia initially had concerns about whether it would be possible to create the dress she envisioned while working with a designer based in another country.

However, with our structured design process, the experience quickly became both enjoyable and collaborative.

The journey began with a FaceTime consultation, allowing Antonia to meet the team and share her initial ideas and inspirations. Through ongoing conversations via phone and email, design concepts were refined and developed. Detailed colour illustrations, fabric selections, stoning layouts and design specifications helped bring the vision to life, ensuring Antonia felt involved at every stage of the process.

"Even though I worked with Chrisanne Clover remotely, I felt very involved in the dress design process. The team carefully listened to my design preferences and really captured my design aesthetic. Working remotely was not a factor at all in the design process."

 

 

Bringing a Vision to Life

For her latest gown, Antonia wanted to revisit one of her favourite features from a previous Chrisanne Clover dress: beautiful 3D flower petals.

 

‘I wanted to use this design element again, but asked the team to design these petals in a new and creative way.  The team designed petals in shimmery and matte chiffon fabrics and the result was ethereal and stunning.’

 

Another key request was the inclusion of feather boas attached to the wrists, suspended from embellished strands. What began as a design idea evolved into something even more striking during the creative process.

 

‘Chrisanne Clover thought about my request regarding the feather boas and took the design to a whole new level.  They added beautiful floaters on the inside of the wrists to give the feather boas greater presence and beautifully balance the dress.  They also used a darker contrast colour on the crystallized strings for the feather boas and this detail created a beautiful accent.’

 

Antonia was also inspired by our recommendation to incorporate white underskirts beneath the blue paradise-coloured gown. This subtle addition highlighted the intricate embellished necklace design and brought perfect balance to the finished look.

 

 

 

Exceeding Expectations

For Antonia, one of the most rewarding aspects of the couture process was the collaboration itself.

She particularly enjoyed seeing how her ideas were developed and elevated by the expertise of the Chrisanne Clover design team.

"I love the collaborative process of talking with the Chrisanne Clover team to design a dress. They carefully listen to your design preferences and propose options that take the design to a higher level."

When the gown was finally completed, the result exceeded even her highest expectations.

"The final dress far exceeded my imagination. It is a testament to Chrisanne Clover's design expertise and creativity."

The Finished Gown

Antonia’s stunning Blue Paradise gown was created using Chrisanne Clover fabrics including stretch net, metallic lycra, satin chiffon, crystal organza and luxurious ostrich feather boas. The gown was embellished with Swarovski® crystals in Electric Blue, Royal Blue Delite, Crystal and Aqua, creating exceptional sparkle under the ballroom lights.

Meet Yu Yi: Welcoming a New Member to the Chrisanne Clover Sponsor Family

We are delighted to welcome professional ballroom dancer Yu Yi to the Chrisanne Clover sponsor family. Following her stunning appearance in Chrisanne Clover couture at the prestigious Blackpool Dance Festival Team Match, we caught up with Yi to learn more about her dance journey, inspirations, and future ambitions.

 

Can you briefly introduce yourself and your dance journey so far? What first drew you to ballroom dancing?

I'm Yu Yi. I started dancing when I was eight years old and have progressed from the Under-12 category all the way to the professional floor.

What first drew me into ballroom dancing was the magic of it all: the beautiful gowns, the elegant heels and the glamour of competition. But over time, through years of training and competing, dance became more than something I did. It became part of who I am, and that's what has kept me committed throughout my journey.

 

What do you feel sets you apart from other dancers on the floor?

Many dancers focus on creating perfect shapes and lines. While those things are important, what matters most to us is what lies beneath them: the feeling, texture and emotion of the dance.

We don't want the audience to simply watch a sequence of steps. We want them to see something alive, something that breathes. That has always been our guiding principle.

 

 

What is something you've learned from top coaches or overseas training that has had the biggest impact on your dancing?

Training internationally taught me that technique is only the beginning. The true essence of ballroom dance lies in flow and breathing together as a partnership.

I learned to genuinely listen to my partner. Partner dancing is not about one person leading and the other following. It's a conversation, with both dancers constantly sensing and responding to each other. Once I understood that, it transformed the way I dance.

 

At such a high competitive level, what helps you stay focused and composed on the floor?

Before stepping onto the floor, I take a moment to let go of everything: rankings, expectations and any pressure I may be feeling.

Then I focus on one thing only: my partner and our connection. I remind myself to be present in the dance rather than chasing a result. Once I am fully immersed in that connection, there is simply no room left for nerves.

 

We were delighted to see you in the wine-coloured dress at this year's Blackpool Dance Festival. How did it feel stepping onto the floor for the Team Match for the first time? Which dance felt the most special to you, and why?

With Blackpool celebrating its 100th anniversary, being on that floor felt even more significant than usual.

It was our first Team Match, dancing alongside some of the best couples in the world. The atmosphere was unlike anything else: exciting, nerve-racking and incredibly inspiring, all at the same time.

The wine-coloured dress also played an important role. It was such a departure from anything I had worn before, yet it suited me better than I expected and gave me a real boost in confidence. For that, I owe Chrisanne Clover a huge thank you.

Of all five dances, the Foxtrot was the most meaningful. I danced it in honour of Andrew Sinkinson, one of the most influential teachers in our journey, whom we sadly lost in January. I like to think he was watching over us.

 

 

You've worn a variety of Chrisanne Clover fabrics throughout your career. What draws you to our materials, and do you have a favourite dress you've created using them?

The drape, stretch and sheen of Chrisanne Clover fabrics are exceptional. To me, they are among the finest dance fabrics in the world. Under competition lights, they create a look that is both luxurious and refined.

I've worn Chrisanne Clover throughout much of my career, and Shaded Satin Chiffon is a fabric I return to time and time again. However, if I had to choose one favourite dress, it would be the sequined gown I wore when I won the British Blackpool Professional Rising Star title in May 2024. The way it reflected the light gave me a whole new level of confidence on the floor.

 

What do you hope audiences feel when they watch you dance?

I hope people can look beyond the technique and choreography to see the connection between two people: the trust, support and understanding that exists within the partnership.

Most of all, I want them to feel the emotion beneath the movement and be swept away by the elegance, romance and flow that ballroom dancing delivers so beautifully.

 

What goals are you currently working towards in your career?

Competitively, I want to continue progressing and challenge myself on larger international stages.

Alongside competing, I'm also passionate about giving back to the dance community. I hope to share my experience with the next generation of dancers in China and help further develop the ballroom scene there. In many ways, I'm pursuing two paths at once: continuing my competitive career while growing as a teacher and mentor.

 

What advice would you give to young dancers aiming to reach a professional level?

This journey is long and often challenging, so you need to genuinely love the craft, not just the idea of success.

Build a strong foundation before chasing complex or flashy movements. If you dance with a partner, learn to communicate openly and be patient with one another. Those qualities are more valuable than many people realise.

Most importantly, view every competition and every training session as an opportunity to learn. Stay committed, keep showing up and trust the process. Growth will follow.

Just months before their spectacular victory at the prestigious Blackpool Dance Festival, where they captured the Under 21 champion title, Olivia Bourne and Kirill were already on an exciting upward trajectory.

When they visited our London showroom to select the fabrics for Olivia’s Blackpool gowns, we had the pleasure of sitting down with this dynamic duo to uncover the story behind their partnership, their passion, and the drive that’s shaping their future on the dance floor.

 

From Different Journeys to One Shared Dream

At just 18, Olivia Bourne has already carved out an impressive path, moving from England to Poland in pursuit of her training. Meanwhile, Kirill, 20, brings over a decade of dance experience, having started at just six years old.

Their stories may have begun worlds apart, but their passion for ballroom brought them together in the studio. What started as casual dances between training sessions soon revealed something special.

A spark. A connection. A partnership.

Nine months later, that instinct has proven right.

 

 

The Moment Everything Changed

For both Olivia and Kirill, dance quickly became more than just a hobby—it became an obsession.

For Olivia, it was that first breakthrough result in her junior years that ignited her ambition:

“The feeling was amazing—I just wanted to see how far it could go.”

For Kirill, it was a moment of competitive hunger:

“I finished third and thought… why not first? Why can’t I be better?”

That relentless mindset continues to drive them today.

We cannot explain how much this title means to us, it still feels like a dream! The people around us know how much hard work and dedication we put in to achieve this goal. This was our last tournament in the U21 category and we are so delighted to finish as the champions. Now we look forward to our next step into Amateur.

Set beneath the grandeur of the Blackpool Tower, one of the most prestigious venues in ballroom history, Irina delivered a performance defined by elegance, power, and precision.

But beyond the technique and triumph, it was the complete visual impact — the silhouette, the movement, the craftsmanship — that elevated her presence on the floor.

 

 

The Black Gown: Understated Glamour, Unforgettable Impact

Irina’s winning look was nothing short of couture mastery. Her striking black ballroom gown was a study in refined drama — elegant, sculptural, and rich in detail.

Handmade in London using the finest Chrisanne Clover fabrics, the design featured:
